Electronic Arts boss John Riccitiello sat down for an interview with the Wall Street Journal. In it he talks about how the gaming industry has painted itself into a corner by releasing ever more complicated sequels of successful games rather than coming up with new ideas. “We’re boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play” he says and cites the fact that the industry is pandering to the hard core gamer and losing the casual ones to other forms of entertainment. The norm of $40 – $60 40 hour game excludes the majority of the market which is just looking for some fun and fast entertainment.
He praises Activision Inc.’s Guitar Hero series and Vivendi SA’s online World of Warcraft and says that the industry has to find new avenues to pursue if it wants to keep up.
